Facebook is rolling out a new algorithm to increase its credibility on the internet. The company is taking preventive measures to stop the spread of misinformation on its platform. With that, the company announced that it will be making major changes on its News Feed to limit pages and groups that do not meet content policies.
Facebook has been criticised in the past for being ineffective in preventing false information and problematic posts from spreading in groups.
Now, Facebook is taking more serious measures on penalising and taking down pages that share problematic posts. The Social media platform will be implementing a new algorithm that is focused on determining whether a website has authority or not.
Cancelling out “fake news” with the Click-Gap signal
Although information about this update is scarce, from what we’ve gathered, the Click-Gap algorithm is designed to reduce low-quality content which appears on Facebook’s News Feed. The Click-Gap algorithm inspects the authority of the website apart from Facebook’s own network.
This means that the shared webpages with high authority will more likely be found higher up in Facebook’s News Feeds. Consequently, links from webpages that have a lower page authority score will have a more limited audience.
Removing low-quality content and shutting down Facebook groups
Once the algorithm has been fully implemented, Facebook will be able to automatically remove links that are posted in Facebook groups. This algorithm will look into how admins and moderators share content on all groups, including private pages. If a group or admin continues to approve or post problematic contents, the group will be subject to termination.
Limiting reach on Facebook News Feed
Websites with poor page authority scores will be considered as non-reliable sources of information. Such sites will be considered inauthentic by the new Facebook algorithm and will show less on the audience’s News Feed.
